Coronavirus update – information on sick pay

Coronavirus Update

Centric HR would like to prepare and inform companies of the ongoing developments around COVID-19 Coronavirus, in relation to the latest information from the CIPD with regards to information on pay if individuals self-isolate. The changes are subtle, but are as follows:-

The government has suggested that pay should be provided from Day 1 if the individual has symptoms and been advised to self-isolate on medical advice. However the government have not enforced this yet and therefore SSP will apply after 3 waiting days, unless a company wishes to use their discretion and pay from Day 1.

If they have symptoms and self-isolate without advice then they are considered to be sick and 3 waiting days apply before SSP applies as normal.

If they self-isolate without symptoms and without medical advice – they are not sick and SSP would not apply.  Employers can use their discretion as this could then be treated as, working from home, ‘other’ paid or unpaid leave (if the individual cannot work from home) or the individual may opt to use holiday leave.

At Centric HR understand the government plan to pass legislation at some point this month and will update this information and continue to communicate and advise as the situation changes.

If you require any information or assistance on any employment, health and safety issues surrounding Coronavirus please do not hesitate to contact us here.
